Gears+ link into the schools curriculum and development and offer a range of personal development programs:
Health and Safety workshop induction Safety and the welfare of participants is paramount before taking part in any of the Gears+ activities, therefore all particpants firstly take the induction to ensure there safety in and out of the workshop.
Metal Art Gears+ offer two programs covering sculpture and jewellery creation:
A six week program encourages the participants to develop their imagination and artistic flair to recycle scrap materials to make metal sculptures and to build on the basic workshop skills that need to be developed. Such as welding, filing and tool handling. Participants can keep any art they make.
Also a six week program encourages the participants to develop their imagination and artistic flair to recycle scrap materials to jewellery and to again build on the basic workshop skills that need to be developed. Participants can keep any art they make.
Cycle Maintenance
A six week program working on the restoration and maintenance of cycles, it requires the participant to use basic tools and equipment and some specialist tools.
Participants will learn to ride safely and responsibly, culminating in the chance to take part in a half day cycle ride.
Karts A very popular course that gives participants the opportunity to build and drive karts. To ensure the project is completed on time and that everyone has an opportunity to drive the kart participants have to learn to work to deadlines and meet targets in addition to the practical workshop skills. Gears+ run two Kart programs:
Short program Building a kart from pre-manufactured parts.
Main Kart Program Participants design and make a basic Kart. This involves drawing the plans; sourcing the materials and parts – some new and some recycled.
Youth Bike Youthbike is an annual event and GEARS+ will be entering again in 2008, it involves months of work to design and build the entry and a weekend away for the competition – hard work but great fun. Take a look at www.youthbike.com
Enterprise Program This program encourages young people to develop Enterprise skills and basic entrepreneurship, developing the ability to plan, manages finances and assess risks. Participants are encouraged to transfer these skills to life situations.
First Gear Program A ten week program encompassing a range of skills that support the development of participants as responsible young people.
