Summer 2008

AnniversaryThe summer started with a celebration of the 1st Anniversary of GEARS+ as a social enterprise. This was attended by the Deputy Mayor of Salford Councillor Roger Lightup and Patrons Jamie Lomas and Anthony Quinlan both Salford born actors who are really keen to put something back into the community. It was a fantastic day and for once it didn't rain.

Unable to attend the event were Support Worker Mark Isherwood and Volunteer Paul Beckett, they were taking part in the Tall Ships Race from Liverpool to Maloy in Norway as part of their Gold Duke of Edinburgh's Award.

summer activitiesThis was followed by two weeks of activities that were attended by young people from across the city. They learned workshop skills, went karting, climbing, mountain biking and lots more. The two weeks were led by Dave Eccleston from GEARS+ and Lee McKay from Social Services who are experts at encouraging young people to try new things.

GEARS+ working in partnership with members of the North West branch of the Hovercraft Club of Great Britain (HCGB) and Friends of Chernobyl held an activity day for a group of children from Chernobyl at Magnolls Farm in Oswaldtwistle.

“It started with a suggestion that it might be nice to give the children a ride on a hovercraft and grew from there” explained Trish Bartlett our Chief Executive who is also the Safety Officer for the local branch of HCGB.

HovercraftA fantastic day was had by everyone there; the children cycled, played with remote control cars, drove karts, had rides on quads and had the unusual experience of hovering for the first time and also enjoyed a barbecue. All of this was possible due to the generosity of Charlie and Karen Peach who own the farm.

As a thank you at the end of the day the children presented us with a small wooden box and a card signed by them all, they also sang for us before they left.Karts

The visit lasted for a month altogether it is anticipated that a month here can extend their life expectancy by up to two years. Each child accepted onto the programme will come to England five times thereby extending their life expectancy by ten years.

We anticipate that this will be an annual event.

Manchester to Blackpool Cycle Race 2008

Salford Young People Cycling For Charity

salford young peoples pedal power

Congratulations to Salford Young Peoples Pedal Power who successfully completed the 63 miles Manchester to Blackpool cycle race on Sunday 13th July 2008. A rewarding day was had by all who took part and helped raise over £1000 for Christies Hospital. This was a fantastic achievement for the GEARS+ and Olivers Youth Club partnership.

It was a long and challenging day for the team starting with early morning breakfast at GEARS+ before heading into Manchester for the starting line. The overall experience proved to be a real eye opener for our young people who were proud to be given the opportunity to participate and make a big difference for such a worthy cause.

mcr to blackpoolThe 8 weeks of training for the participants prior to the race was undertaken by Graham Cooper of Oliver's Youth Club. This certainly paid off on the day as all 10 members of the group completed the testing 63 miles. Which just goes to show with positive support and determination the young people of salford can really achieve great things!

Additional support for the venture was provided by Child Action Northwest, "It was a fantastic experience to support and see the young people complete the full race. We are looking forward to supporting the group next year", said Lee Turnbull (Child Action Northwest).

"This was the first partnership of its kind and it is hoped that there will be many more to follow" said Trish Bartlett, Chief Executive of GEARS+. mcr to blackpool

The group will be celebrating their fantastic achievement with a meal later in the month and are all looking forward to competing in the race again next year.

Partners rise to the challenge

Manchester to Blackpool Cycle Race 2008On Sunday 13 July 2008 GEARS+ and OLIVERS YOUTH CLUB are working together as Salford Young Peoples Pedal Power, to take part in the annual Manchester to Blackpool Cycle Race – raising money for the Christie Hospital.

This is the first partnership venture of this kind and it is hoped that there will be many more. The organisation and training of the participants has been undertaken by Graham Cooper from Oliver’s Youth Club and the administration and technical support has been left to GEARS+ led by Martyn Smethurst and Haley Lever.

Additional support for the venture has been provided by Lee Turnbull of Child Action Northwest.

It will be a long and challenging day starting with breakfast at GEARS+ before going into Manchester for the start of the ride. All the team will be sporting T shirts that Graham has organised. It should be a fantastic day and hopefully raise lots of money for Christies.
