GMP Dog Unit visits GEARS+

GEARS+ continues to have a good ongoing relationship with the GMP.

Officers from the Greater Manchester Police Dog Handling Unit attended Gears+ in May 09 to give a full demonstration of working police dogs in action.

The session was interactive and extremely successful with the students asking lots of questions. It highlighted the importance of police dogs and their roles within the  force. Working wiith cases such as missing person searches, tracking criminals, locating drugs and explosives, and victim recovery to name a few, police dogs are a valid member of the force.

A group of pupils from Albion High School attended the session. Two organised drug searches were performed sucessfully and the pupils were given the chance to pet the energetic and friendly dogs and ask the officers any questions.

GEARS+ also took the opportunity to incorporate drugs and drink and drive issues within this session, with practical driving simulator sessions.

Granada Reports comes to GEARS+

Granada ReportsOn 4 March 2009 GEARS+ welcomed Granada Reports and Amanda Peak to one of their Road Safety Sessions. The sessions are based around the "WRECKED" DVD that has been produced by the Greater Manchester Road Safety Partnership to help raise awarenes amongst young people of the dangers that are inhernet in driving and how easily accidents can occur.

Amanda and the crew spent about two hours with a group of students from Pendleton College,  she talked about the tragic loss of her two sons and the impact that it has had on her life, that of her family and the family of the passengers who survived the crash. She is now campaigning to reduce the permitted levels of alcohol.

The students responded well to her talk and asked lots of questions, some were interviewed by Ashley Derricott from Granada Reports and the piece was broadcast on Wednesday 11 March.Granada Reports

In addition to her campaigning and awareness raising Amanda is training to run in the Edinburgh Marathon later this year. If you would like to sponsor Amanda and support Brake, the Road Safety charity the go to www.justgiving.com/amandapeak

A.G.M.

On 10 December 2008 GEARS+ held it's first Annual General Meeting. It was a good time to reflect on the achievements since independence in August 2007 and to look forward to the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

The BoardIn his report Chair, Derek Osbaldestin, made particular comment about the positive reputation that is continuing to grow and how the involvement of organisations like the Princes Trust have helped to improve the appearance of the premises. He was particularly pleased to welcome Amber Ormandy to the Board as a representative of young people in the area.

Chief Executive Trish Bartlett took the oppotunity to thank the Board and Staff for their support during this first operational period.

GEARS+ lends a hand to Cyclone

Cyclone Project

GEARS+ has recently kindly donated four bikes to the Cyclone Project. These bikes will be restored back to full working order by the young people, enabling them to then use the cycles for future employment. GEARS+ fully supports this worthy project and all young people taking part.
