Friend's of Chernobyl's Children 2010

Friends of Chernobyl's Children

Each summer Friends of Children of Chernobyl (FOCC) bring groups of children over to the UK for a month to undergo health checks and take part in a range of educational and fun activities.  Once on the programme they visit once a year for five years staying with a host family.  It is expected that this period of respite has the potential to increase their life expectancy by up to ten years.

For the last three years GEARS+in partnership with the Hovercraft Club of Great Britain (HCGB) have delivered a fun filled day of activities at Magnoll's Farm in Oswaldtwistle, courtesy of Charlie Peach.  This now annual event is challenging and rewarding and involves all of the GEARS+ team plus volunteers.   Activities keeping the children entertained this year included hovercraft rides, giant snakes and ladders, giant connect 4, mudblasters, quad bike rides, scooters and bicycles.  A thankyou goes to Clifton PRU for letting us borrow the giant games.

New additions to the activities this year included badge making and a smoothie bike.  The smoothie bike is a static bicycle with a blender attached to the back so that when you peddle the blender turns.  Unfortunately there were some technical difficulties with the smoothie bike but due to Trish's quick thinking the youngsters still got their smoothies.

For lunch burgers, hotdogs, drinks and chocolate bars were provided by Marie's snack van (07724417884).  Marie has supported the event for the last two years and even managed a ride on a hovercraft last year.

Workers from FOCC watch with longing as the children whiz around the race circuit on the hovercraft, so as a special treat this year Mike King brought out his Formula 1 racing craft, in which for once he behaved quite sedately, and took the workers who were brave enough for a spin.

Our number 1 volunteer for this event, Abi King aged 7, soon made friends with the children and encouraged them to try everything on offer.

After lunch and some more activities everybody congregated in the barn where Trish Bartlett (GEARS+ CEO) and Granville Spedding (HCGB) handed out goody bags to the youngsters as a momento of their visit.  Each of the groups had brought presents for the organisers and the youngsters thanked everybody in English and sang a song.

When everyone had departed it was time for the staff and volunteers to enjoy some downtime before leaving for the weekend. Special thanks go to Dave Eccleston Operations Manger for helping to pull the day together, GEARS+ volunteers Mike and Julie King, Brenda Neale, Jilly Earp, Nadine Allen and Josh Vella and special help from Steph, Cardin and Dan. HCGB members Granville Spedding, Jeff Green, Franklin Newton, Bob Clegg, and not forgetting Charlie Peach for his ongoing support.

The pictures will be in available in the gallery shortly.

Oh What A Night!

On Friday 11th June 2010, we held our first major fundraising event; a dinner dance and cabaret at Eccles Masonic Hall.

The team went to the hall in the afternoon to prepare things for the night.  Trish and Suzanne set the display stand up whilst Dave, Mike and Jonathan filled balloons with helium and attached them to weights made by Adam Robinson, a volunteer at GEARS+. Meanwhile Joe was setting up the disco and entertainer Steve Yorke arrived to lend a hand and carry out his sound check..

All the team were back at the Masonic Hall for 6.15pm ready for guests starting to arrive from 6.30pm.  a three course dinner was served at 7:00pm; a soup starter, a roast beef main and black forest gateau for dessert.  Once the plates had been cleared away Joe started the evening with a special GEARS+ jingle, we were entertained first by Carly and then Gary two talented local young people who have given support free of charge to a number of youth events.  Joe introduced us to Shellie Skillen, his "sidekick"  on Salford City Radio, and explained that she was fifteen when she made her debut on the radio twelve months ago.  Next to entertain was Dominic Collins a comedy vocal entertainer who was very very funny.  After Dominic came Steve Yorke who made sure he got everybody up dancing.  A superb night was had by all, Dominic very kindly donated any sales of his cd's on the night and all in all we raised £930.  A big thank you to everyone that helped make this event possible. See the gallery for more snaps from the evening.

Bench Installation

Friday 26th February was a big day for a group of pupils from Harrop Fold School and the team at GEARS+.

At the end of September 2009 a group of young people from Harrop Fold started attending GEARS+ once a week, they were working towards the Skills Section of their Duke of Edinburgh's Award (Silver).  They decided to make a bench to go in a local park, having decided this is what they were going to do they had to set about designing and then making the bench.  Over ten weeks the young people gained many skills from this exercise including welding, grinding, painting, team working and problem solving, as well as a huge awareness of Health and Safety issues.

Four of the group turned up to help GEARS+ team members Mike Ferguson and Jonathan Flynn install the bench at Peel Park.  Also present was Trish Bartlett (CEO,Gears+), Dave Eccleston (Special Projects Co-Ordinator,GEARS+) and representatives from Salford Youth Service who funded the project and  staff from Harrop Fold School and the Salford Ranger Team.  Despite the awful weather (it rained constantly) the bench was fully installed in time for the young people to get back to school before lunch time!

"This has demonstrated real partnership in action and highlights the positive contribution that young people make to their community" said Trish Bartlett.

An official ceremony to recognise the achievements of this project is planned for later in the year.

Go along to Peel Park in Little Hulton and see for yourself this magnificent piece of work.
