Funding was secured in late 2004 to set up a motor based project that aimed to provide positive and diversionary activities for young people in the New Deal for Communities area of Salford. Premises were quickly found and work began to develop the facilities. In May 2005 delivery commenced with the two main outputs being to work with as many young people as possible and to create an organisation that would be sustainable beyond the initial grant funded period. During that first operational year GEARS+ began to establish itself with the community and education sectors as an organisation that delivered quality provision for young people. Local young people helped to paint the new premises and assisted at the official opening. They also took part in the production of a BBC television Car Wars documentary. Work on sustainability began almost immediately with the setting up of an Advisory Group to act as a Board of Directors and in April 2007 GEARS+ Ltd was incorporated as a Company Limited by Guarantee. Operation as a Social Enterprise began on the 1 August 2007 and Charitable Status was granted in April 2008.
